Intraoperative miosis is a major problem during cataract surgery, especially when operating surgeon is a trainee. SICS is still an important option for cataract surgery in India. When it is performed by learning surgeons especially by PG residents in medical colleges, there are chances of comparatively more manipulation which can lead to iris irritation with release of prostaglandins, ultimately resulting into constricted pupil. This in turn makes the surgery more difficult to be performed by the resident, with increased chances of related complications.

In this randomised case controlled study, intracameral preservative free 1% Lignocaine was used during SICS surgery done by residents and its effect in preventing intraoperative miosis was tested.

Result showed statistically significant reduction in intraoperative constriction of pupil when intracameral Lignocaine was used, concluding that it can be effectively used to prevent intraoperative miosis, especially for trainee surgeons.
