Aim

To evaluate effectiveness of photo screener (auto-refractor) in detecting amblyopia risk factors in children.

Methods

Children, 6 months -15 years, were screened with auto refractor (AR) to detect refractive error(RE), strabismus or media opacity(MO) based on AAO guide lines. The results were compared with manual refraction, prism cover test & slit lamp examination.

Results

Seventy-five children with RE, strabismus or MO & seventy five normals were included.

Sensitivity to detect hyperopia, astigmatism & horizontal strabismus >8 PD were 50%, 82.1% & 69.2% respectively.

Specificity to detect hyperopia, astigmatism & horizontal strabismus were 97.3%, 94.1% & 95.6%.

Discussion

Auto refractor is a useful tool with high specificity to screen amblyopia risk factors among children in schools and community.

Conclusions

To the best of our knowledge this is the first study from India on sensitivity & specificity of AR in detecting amblyopia risk factors. AR is an effective screening tool
