Photorefractive keratectomy(PRK) is a wonderful procedure with many advantages. However, the procedure has the disadvantage of post operative pain. In this video we have shown a novel technique to combat post PRK pain. We have used a bandage contact lens(BCL) soaked in 0.45% preservative free ketorolac solution(Acuvail) as a depot. We have also used U-High Performance Liquid Chromatography(U-HPLC) to quantify the leakage of the drug from a BCL over time. To see the effect, 70 patients were divided into two groups. The first group received a regular BCL after surgery while the second group received the BCL soaked in acuvail. The validated Wong Bakers pain scale was used to assess the pain on the next day after surgery. The pain in the first group was significantly more than the second which received the acuvail soaked BCL. The U- HPLC also showed that the BCL acted as a depot for around 2 hours. Thus the BCL soaked in acuvail helped to reduce pain in patients post PRK.
