Aim : To report the use of a natural commodity i.e a lemon,as a model eye for simulated practise of various ophthalmic procedures
M/M : A lemon about the size of an eye ball is chosen & a circular opening is made on one aspect of the lemon & its contents scooped out.The circular opening is closed with a snuggly fitting 60D landers lens. The cavity of the lemon serves as the vitreous cavity & the rind serves as the sclera giving a human tissue consistency.Various procedures-localising & cryo of breaks, episcleral suture passage for SB,ILM peel, phacofragmentation, simulated IOFB removal, bimanual VR surgery,IOL removal, making SICS & trabectomy flaps, intravitreal injections, even phacoemulsification etc can all be practised with our model eye.
Conclusion ; This innovation using easily accessible & inexpensive material will be a game changer for wetlab training superceding more expensive model eyes.It has the potential to revolutionalise surgical teaching & is a one of a kind method
